The novel starts with a series of letters written by Sir Colin Edensor and his wife Sally to their son William.
From the letters we understand that the son is now part of a cult, the Universal Humanitarian Church. William is autistic and refuses to see them. The parents beg him to let them see him, and there is only one time that the boy agreed, but that ended up badly as Colin couldn't contain his anger. The prologue also contains communication with Kevin Pirbright, who is a former member of the church and has a blog exposing the church, but the church's lawyers write to him to retract his statements. We learn that the church is maily located in Norfolk, and previously there was a community there, which was closed because the Crowther brothers, who run it, were arrested for sexual abuse. The only member of those days is Mazu Waze, who is the wife of the founder of the church, Jonathan. They have two sons, but there was a girl, Taio, who drowned and now is a prophet of the church, and Jonathan's first wife also drowned. Sir Colin and his wife are unable to do anything, and their son continues living there. William doesn't reply to their letters when they tell him that his mother is dying, and he doesn't even go to the funeral.
At present Cormoran and Robin are at the christening of Ilsa and Nick's son, Benji. They are both godparents, and Robin has been dating DCI Murphy for eight months, which Cormoran dislikes. During the party Cormoran and Robin talk about meeting Sir Colin Edensor, and they go to see him the next day. Colin is with his two sons, Edward and James. He tells them about William joining the church four years ago when he was at university. He suddelny dropped out and joined the church. Colin says that at the time his son Edward had a terrible accident, so he and his wife were more worried about Edward than William. Colin tells Cormoran and Robin about the years of fight, and when they mention Kevin, they learn that he is dead. He was shot dead in his apartment four months ago, and it seems that it was a matter of drugs. Robin and Cormoran decide to take the case, and the plan is for Robin to infiltrate and go undecover in the community, so she now has changed her hairstyle, and Prudence, Cormoran's stepsister, has given her some expensive clothes so that she could be seen as a good catch.
Something interesting is that Cormoran and Lucy were in the community when their mother took them there. When Cormoran tells Lucy, she is very uspet, and she says that the founder's wife, Mazu, took her to one of the brothers who touched Lucy, so she tells Cormoran to try to get Mazu for what she did to all the little girls.
