Robin is invited to a week on Farm Camp, intending to investigate and find out more about the cult so that they can free Will. She has invented a new self, and goes by the name of Rowena, and Cormoran and the others tell her that there is a blind spot on Farm Camp where Barclay has planted a hollow stone where there will be communications from them, and Robin can leave her reports.
After a week there, Robin agrees to stay. From the first moment she realises that this is much worse than she thought. Everything is controlled. Becca, Kevin's sister, is one of the leaders, but there is not much love lost between her and her sister, Emily, who has been in another camp, but she has been moved again and has her head shaved. Robin hears that she became intimate with a member in the settlement in Norwich and was punished because of it. In this community bonding is forbidden and there is only spiritual bonding, which means you have to agree to lay with anyone who asks.
Robin finds it difficult to talk to Will, who seems very strict in his views, but little by little she notices that he has doubts. She also discovers that Will and a young member, Lin, had a daughter, Qing. Lin has been told that she is to leave, and she doesn't want to separate from her daughter. Then she falls pregnant and takes some herbs. Robin finds her in the bathroom bleeding, and Lin is taken away but she doesn't know where. When she asks Cormoran in her communications to find her in some hospital, there is no trace of her.
There is a mystery about Daiyu, the little girl who drowned and has become their main prophet. They discover that she was not the daughter of Wace, but Alexander, the young man, who hanged himself after his family kidnapped him and took him from the cult. Alexander had money and Daiyu inherited all that money. The investigation leads Cormoran to think that there was a plot to make Daiyu disappear so that the church would inherit the money her father left her. The day that Daiyu died, a girl from the church took her to the beach. The girl was Carrie, and Cormoran thinks that they need to speak to her, but they are unable to find her.
On he compound Robin feels more and more nervous, especially when she knows that she will have to spirit bond. Wace's son has his sights on her, and on one occasion Wace also gropes her. Her position in the church becomes complicated, and she knows she is running of time, especially as she is punished by being locked in a wooden box. So she decides to leave, but that week there are special ceremonies and she can't sneak out of her bedroom. Then she realises that she has to force Will's hand, so she asks him to spirit bond with her, and he agrees. They go to the retreat room, and Robin tries to tell him that if he has doubts about the church, but the man is deaf to her words. Yet, he gets upset when she tells him that his mother is dead. One of the men ouside comes to the room when Will hits her, and Robin then runs to the bedroom, and she escapes out of the window, running to the spot where Cormoran is waiting, and they flee.
Robin is very upset and tells Cormoran everything. Robin is worried about a boy, Jacob, who she had o keep wach over, who is ver sick and has no medical care. Robin talks to the police and reports the boy's neglect. Then Robin has a week off and her parents stay with her, as they have been very worried. Then the police come as they want to question her in relation to allegations of child abuse. Robin asks her father to call Cormoran, but at that moment Cormoran is busy with his team, following the Frank brothers, who are suspected to plan to kidnap Tasha, an actress they had stalked. Thankfully, Cormoran and the others stop the brothers, who are arrested.
Then Cormoran gets the call from Robin's father, and when he goes to her, she tells him that some members of the church have reported her for abusing a child named Jacob. It is just revenge from the church, and Cormoran is told that his wikipedia page has some terrible allegations which allegedly have been added by the church.
Thanks to Pat's daughter Cormoran gets to see the Facebook page of Carrie, the woman who is clearly Cherie, who took Taiyu to swim when she drowned. Robin and Cormoran go to talk to her, and the woman is nervous when she is asked a lot of questions. After the interview, Robin thinks that she can't have killed the girl, and she really believed that the girl drowned. The next day Cormoran gets a call from Carrie's husband, and he learns that Carrie has hanged herself. She is not the first person to have committed suicide, because the former member who was in prison, Reane, also tried to kill himself when he got a call from a woman. It seems that Carrie also got a call, and Robin discovers that the church kept tabs on her because when Murphy shows her the interviews in which Becca stated that Robin had abused a child in the church, Becca mentioned Carrie and said that she hoped that she and her two daughters would join the church in the future again.
Another important thing is that Charlotte is now dead. She swallowed a mixture of pills and overdosed. That was after she called Cormoran and he ignored her calls. Cormoran refuses to feel guilty because he helped her for sixteen years and it was in vain.
