Cormoran has no intention to accept the case, but he wants to make a few enquiries first. The main thing is to find out if the police have really identified the man. That is why Robin tells him that she could ask Ryan, which is not something Cormoran likes, but they have no other option. Ryan promises to find out, but it is not easy for him because the colleague he has to ask is someone he had a thing with once. When Ryan has the information, he tells Robin that the information is quite sensitive, so only she and Cormoran need to know or his job would be in danger.
Ryan tells them that the body was found on a Monday, and it seems that the man died that Friday. Some camera caught the image of four men, but the faces weren't identified. What Ryan tells them is that they think that the body belongs to Knowles, whose uncle is a big fish in the criminal world, and the rumour is that the uncle ordered the murder of the nephew. There is not a clear identification because there weren't any fingerpints as the cleaner, Todd, cleaned the shop before the body was found. Besides, the body, who was mutilated, had no hands as the killer had chopped them off. Ryan tells Cormoran that he can't investigate Julian Knowles, and Cormoran replies that he is not interested in the guy. He just wants to identify the body to ease Decima's worries. Cormoran silently admits that he is going to accept the case, just because it would annoy Murphy.
Robin and Cormoran go to talk to Ramsay, the owner of the silver shop. The man tells them that the pieces that were stolen during the breakin were all connected to the freemasonry. Cormoran realises that security here is poor, and he also discovers that Ramsay's sister-in-law, Margaret, who was manning the shop, left early, leaving Wright there.
There are other two men who could have been the dead man as his relatives reported them missing. One is Tyler Powell, who had come to find a job in London, and the other was Niall Semple, an exparatrooper with mental health problems.
The agency are now investigating two other cases. One client is a South-African cricketer who suspects his ex-wife of having an affair with Dominic Culpepper because certain facts have appeared in the press. Cormoran and his agents haven't noticed anything untoward between the ex-wife and Dominic. Then Cormoran and Kim go to the Rochester where there is a charity function, and Kim catches the ex-wife kissing Lady Violet, Culpepper's wife. So that is where the leak comes from.
The other case is a man they call Grub who lives with his teenage son and his mother. The woman's brother has hired the agency because he suspects that Grub not only abuses his mother but is draining her of her money.
