The Hallmarked Man 3 (Pages 127 - 232)

SPOILERS!!!

Robin and Cormoran continue the investigation but there are many fronts that want to stop them. First, Shanker calls Cormoran to tell him that the person behind the crime is dangerous and he should stop trying to find out who the body in the vault is. He claims that Knowles is dead, but the body in the vault was not him. Shanker says that there is a powerful man, probably a mason, and the person who did the killing is someone he knows but doesn't know his name.

When Cormoran tells Robin, they both agree that they can't stop now. Cormoran also gets the visit of an MI5 agent, Ralph Lawrence, who tells him that he should stop looking into the disappearance of Niall Semple, a military man who is one of the men who could be the body. Lawrence says that if he continues finding out about Semple, he would be tampering with their investigation. Cormoran states that he has no intention to stop his investigation. About Semple Cormoran has contacted the wife, but in the short conversation they had a man told her to hang up.

Cormoran also gets a note in code, and when he decodes the messages, he is told that the killer is a dangerous man on TV, Dangerous Dick, who Cormoran discovers is a porn star. This is something that Cormoran and Robin don't know what to think of.

It seems that the key to the robbery and the murder is freemasonry, and there is something strange about the delivery of the jewels that day. The delivery man was late and made a mistake with the bigger piece, sending it to Pamela's shop, so Wright had to go and bring it back. Cormoran is told that the delivery man, McGee, was supected of stealing a few things from another client, so his boss ordered that he go with someone else. The day of the delivery to Ramsay, he asks his colleague to take something for his cold at Boots, and when the younger man returned, he was gone. That was around lunchtime, and he turned up at Ramsay's at three o'clock. His boss tells Cormoran that he claims that he left because he thought he was going to be late as his colleague was taking too long to return, and then he got lost on the way there. McGee expected to be fired, and he didn't seem to care when he was given his marching orders. The security guard at the auction house lives close to where McGee did and used to meet him at the pub, and McGee told him that he didn't care about the job because he was to get a windfall soon, but the next time he saw him and asked him, he was very angry. McGee is dead; he was found dead in his apartment.

I think that the key to this mystery lies on the delivery of the jewels. But who is the dead man if it is now Knowles?

Apart from this, Robin has agreed to find a house to live with Ryan even though she has too many doubts. I think she is behaving foolishly, especially after her experience with Matthew. She tells herself that she loves Murphy, but she is clearly deluding herself. Cormoran plans to declare his feelings to Robin soon, and I don't know how this will pan out.
