SPOILERS!!!
The ending of this novel was not what I expected, and I was really surprised.
Robin and Cormoran are stunned to discover that Will has escaped Chapman Farm with his little daughter, Qing. He tells Robin and Cormoran that he is ready to accept prison time as he is aware he has done wrong, but first, they need to help him find Lin. His condition is that they don't tell his father. Yet, Robin and Cormoran are beholden to their client, and they talk to Sir Colin. Will and the little girl are staying with Pat and her husband. Sir Colin agrees to finance the investigation three more months because he wants to see the church down.
Through Prudence, Cormoran and Strike discover that one of her clients is a former member of the church, and incidentally Cormoran contacted her because she had posted some drawings of Daiyu, and i was after this contact that she deleted her account. Prudence is upset that Cormoran contacted her client, and he guesses that the clien is Flora, a girl who thought the church was the answer to her emotional problems. Robin did no think that they should disturb someone who is in a delicate condition. However, she changes her mind and talks Prudence into letting them talk to Flora. Her idea is that Will, who is another former member could be a support to her.
The encounter takes place and even though it does not start well as Will is very forceful in his opinions. Yet, Robin leans a lot from the enconter, and they tell her about some secrets. Many of the children are sold for a high price; there is a spot where bodies whose deaths have nor been registered are buried.
As Robin and Cormoran gather information, they inform the police. They discover that Qing is in the clinic of Dr Zhou, and the police go after her.
Cormoran and Strike have been the aim of some harassing. he cameras in the agency caught a man wearing a balaklava and carrying a gun, trying to break in. Cormoran and Robin notice men watching he agency. And then after the meeting between Will and Flora, a car follows them and shoots them.
Robin and Cormoran think that Taiyu's deah is fishy, and at some point we think that Taiyu is alive and may be Becca. But then we get the surprise when Cormoran goes to see Abigail, Wace's daughter. The key is the polaroid photos, and Cormoran reveals that Abigail was the one who dominated those in the photos (Cherie, Paul and Reaney). She hated Daiyu, and that night she and Reaney killed Daiyu and put her body for the pigs to eat her, and Cherie pretended that she had Daiyu with her, using a straw figure, and then she made up the story about Daiyu drowning. It was Abigail who killed Kevin because he had guessed what she had done, and she also used some of her boyfriends to keep watch on Cormoran and Robin, and she also sent someone to shoot them.
Abigail is arrested, and Waze and his wife are also in custody for all the crimes committed in the church. Will and Lin reunite, and they go to live with Sir Colin with their little daughter, who they have renamed Sally. That was a happy end for them.
Cormoran agrees to go and see Charlotte's sister, Amelia. The woman tells him that Charlotte left a long suicide note in which Cormoran featured, and her wish was for him to read it. Yet, Amelia admits that she burnt the note because she didn't think it was fair for anybody, especially Charlotte's children. Cormoran tells her that he knows what Charlotte wrote, blaming him for her state of mind and accusing him of being in love with Robin.
Later when Robin gets to the office, Pat tells her that Cormoran has gone to see Amelia, Charlotte's sister. When she asks him about it, Cormoran mentions the note, and he says that Charlotte accused him of being in love with Robin. Robin expects that he would say that it was a lie, but he doesn't say anything. She becomes stunned, and leaves the agency as Murphy is waiting for her, but she is totally confused. I wonder if in the next book their sexual tension would be sorted out.
