- Lura Ingalls is six in this book. She tells us the story even though it is in the third person.
- Baby Carrie is the youngest daughter.
- Jack is the family's dog.
- Uncle Henry Ingalls lives closeby and helps his brother.
- Aunt Polly is Henry's wife.
- Cousin Charley is Henry and Polly's mischievous eldest child.
- Uncle Peter also visits the Ingalls.
- Aunt Eliza is Uncle Peter's wife.
- Peter is Uncle Peter and Aunt Eliza's son.
- Alice and Bella are Uncle Peter and Aunt Eliza's daughters.
- Dolly Varden is Uncle Peter and Aunt Eliza's baby daughter.
- Uncle George Ingalls lives with Grandma and Grandpa. He was in the Civil war as a drummer boy. He plays the bugle and Charles describes him as wild
- Aunt Dacia and Aunt Ruby also live with Grandm and Grandpa
- Uncle James Ingalls is another brother
- Aunt Libby is Uncle Jame's wife
- Cousin Laura Ingalls is James and Libby's daughter.
- Mr and Mrs Peterson are close-by neighbours
- Mr and Mrs Hulleat are also neighbours.
- Eva and Clarence Hulleat are the Hulleats' children.
