These are the characters in the novel:
- Juan Bragas de Pipaon is the narrator and main character. He describes how he has managed to get a good position thanks to his contacts, and in the novel he uses his trickery to get hold of some land that belonged to the Misses de Porrúa. In the previous book he was Salvador's friend and used to work for the Requejos.
- Buenaventura is Bragas's protector.
- María Castro de Oro, Countess of Rumblar is a character that appeared in the first series and she wanted her son to marry Ines. She is very strict to her daughters, and hardly lets them go out. Her plan is for her daughter Asunción to be a nun and for her daughter Presentación to be a spinster. In a previous book, she disowned Asunción when she tried to escaped with an Englishman.
- Presentación is Doña María's other daughter. Presentación is in love with Gasparito Grijalva and asks Bragas for help as her beloved is in prison. When Bragas proves to be a traitor as he takes the lands of the MIsses Porrua, Presentación takes her revenge and humiliated him before the king.
- Diego Hipólito Féliz de Cantalicio Afán de Ribera, Count of Rumblar, is Presentación's brother. He was a key character in the first series and he wanted to marry Ines.
- Doña Salomé de Porrúa is one of Presentación's friends.
- Doña Paz de Porrúa is also a friend of Presentación's,, and she asks Bragas for help as she wants a moratorium to pay some debts. Yet, the man uses the information to become the owner of the woman's lands.
- Gasparito Grijalva is Presentación's beloved. He is incarcirated because he said that the king had a large nose.
- Don Alfonso de Grijalva is Gasparito's father and he is the person the Misses Porrúa owe the money to. As Alfonso is upset about his son's incarceration, Bragas uses the opportunity to buy the debt that the Porruas had with the man.
- Duke of Alagon (Paquito Córdoba) is a friend of Juan's and is very close to the king.
