The mystery of Evelyn's death originates in the past. Archie arrests Donald, the husband, as the weapon has his fingerprints.

James confesses to Josephine about killing Marion in a rage, and he tells her too that Evelyn left him a letter, which he thought would clarify where Matthew's body was or what had happened. However, the letter showed that she thought that her brother was manipulative and selfish, and James admits to Josephine that after remembering what went on between them, he has to acknowledge the fact that Evelyn was right. After the conversation, Josephine tells him that he needs to confess and give himself up to the police, and James says he will do it.

Back at her accommodation Josephine gets a call from Archie, who wants to talk to James, and Josephine is surprised to discover that Marion is alive and the woman who is dead is her daughter, Evelyn. Josephine tells him everything that James told her, and he says that James is not less guilty because his attack may have caused the stroke, and the woman is feared to die soon. Archie wants to talk to Daphne because she may remember something about Matthew's suicide.

There is a turmoil when Hitchcock takes his daughter for a walk, and the child disappears. For three hours they don't know where she is, and then Josephine spots her holding the hand of Lee. The child claims that Lee told her to go with her. The Hitchcocks are glad to have Patricia back and have no intention to report Lee, who tells Josephine that she only wanted them to experience what she did with her father. Then Josephine sees James, and he tells her that his colleagues were involved but as they were sick, she wanted him to help her. Yet, James convinced her to return the child. Josephine tells him what Archie told her, and she reminds him of his intention to give himself up. Yet, she can tell that he won't and then Archie goes away.

Archie talks to Daphne, who remembers James and her errand to take the miniature to Matthew. She then tells him about being told off by Marion, who was her inspiration to her Mrs Danvers. And she remembers when he shows her the photo of the staff back then that there was a nurse walking ahead of her, and this woman was Evelyn. So Archie doesn't know if it was Marion or Evelyn who pushed Matthew to kill himself.

Then when he talks to the doctor who treated Marion for his stroke, the man did not see any laceration on her face that would evidence James's attack. What he tells him is that Georgia Wells did not go to the hospital with Marion on the ambulance, but she went later. That is suspicious, and when Archie goes to confront her, Marion has just died. Georgia knows what Archie has come for, and she confesses that the day that she found Marion, she called the ambulance and went to have a holdall to pick up some clothes for Evelyn. Then he found a suitcase in her room, and she recognised the contents as the things that Robert, her son, took when he went to the front with Matthew. Georgia went to find Evelyn, and the woman said that Robert never went to the war with Matthew. When he go to Milton Hall and saw the wounded soldiers, he realised that he didn't want to go and told Matthew. Matthew killed him, and he went to find Evelyn and Marion. They helped him to bury him, and then he went to the front, and he wrote to them and the women told Georgia about her son. Georgia was so angry that she shot Evelyn and killed her. Georgia said that she would have confessed anyway if Donald had been charged with murder. 

In America the scene where Rebecca's room gets burnt and Mrs Danvers dies. Josephine is witness to the filming, and then James appears and walks into the flames and he is burnt to death.
