Winifred seems a woman who has no morals. There is a parlourmaid, Sue Lamb, who she finds attractive and nice and when she becomes daring and bites her ear sensually, the girl calls depraved, and how everybody thinks that she is weird. That angers Winifred and all of a sudden, what attracted her is gone, and then she kills her.
Then Christmas comes. We discover that Winifred put Sue Lamb's body in the attic, and the Pounds think that the girl fled with a gardener. Then Winifred kills again when she finds a groom in the gallery when she is vandalising the paintings. And his body goes to the attic again.
The Pounds receive their guests for Christmas, including the Fanceys, whose baby Winifred killed and replaced with the farmers' boy. It seems that nobody noticed the difference, which I find difficult to believe. Even if the parents delegated the baby's care to the servants, the nanny must have noticed some difference. Winifred attends all the meals as she has to chaperon Drusilla as it is the first occasion that the girl has to be with adults. We have confirmation that Mr Pounds is Winifred's father. It seems that Mrs Pounds thinks that her husband is attraced to Winifred and Drusilla tells Winifred that she knows her father loves Winifred and maybe they will get married. That shows that Drusilla has little love for her mother. We also discover that this is Mr Pounds's second marriage, and Mrs Pounds tells Winifred that her husband's first wife had leaches in her neck, and he left her and their children.
I think that Winifred has dark plans for the family and maybe even their guests. I wonder what she is going to do.
