The Man Who Died Twice 2 (Pages 54 - 145)

 SPOILERS!!!

Someone tries to kill Douglas. He hears sounds in the flat, so he hides in the wardrobe. The man finds him, and Douglas thinks his number is up. However, Poppy appears and shots the man dead. The dead man is called Andrew Hastings who worked for Lomax. 

Douglas calls Elizabeth and she calls Joyce. The two friends go th flat, and Joyce is very worried because Poppy is very upset and shaken. Elizabeth is cold about what has happened and tells Poppy that what happened comes with the job. Before Poppy and Douglas are taken to be questioned, she surreptitiously puts a piece a paper in Joyce's cardigan pocket. Joyce reads it later at home, and it is message asking her to call her mum. Joyce eventually does it, and Poppy's mother, she realises that Siobham didn't know what her daughter does for a living. Joyce tries to reassure her, and they agree to meet in a few days.

Elizabeth hasn't forgotten about what happened to Ibrahim, and she, Ron and Joyce plan to give his attacker a lesson. Elizabeth arranges everything. With the help of Bogdan, she buys a kilo of cocaine. Bogdan knows the local dealer, Connie, who is the woman Donna and Cris are after. Connie has a thing for Bogdan, but he is not interested. After he buys the cocaine, Ron is waiting for him, dressed as a plumber, and Bogdan gives him the package with the cocaine. After that, Ron goes to Ryan's apartment and tells him that he is the plumber but the service is out of charge. In the bathroom Ron places the package and Ibrahim's debit card in the cistern. Then using a burner phone, he calls Donna trying to give him an anonymous tip, but Donna recognises his voice at once. That was a very funny moment. Donna promises to go and check what he is reporting.

Douglas and Poppy are sent to a safe house in Hove. Douglas asks Elizabeth to come and see him, and she takes Joyce with her. There is a van with an officer outside and Elizabeth gives him some code to be allowed in. Then as soon as she and Joyce step inside, Elizabeth knows there is something wrong. It is too silent, and then she finds the back door wide open. Joyce grabs two knives from the kitchen, and Elizabeth goes upstairs. She finds Poppy and Douglas shot dead, their faces almost gone. This is really a shock and I feel so sorry for Poppy, who didn't really like this job to begin with. Douglas took the diamonds and I imagine that this is why he has been killed. But what about poor Poppy?
