La Corte de Carlos IV - Characters

These are the characters that appear in the novel.

REGULAR CHARACTERS

- Gabriel Araceli (16) is the narrator and main character. He was born in Cadiz and his mother was the only person who cared for him. There was an uncle who was very cruel. When his mother died, Gabriel ran to Medina Sidonia where he met Don Alonso and Doña Francisca, who hired him as a page, and he was happy with them. Gabriel was in love with their daughter, Rosita, but he was disappointed when she fell for someone else. Gabriel was with his master in the Battle of Trafalgar at the age of fourteen and saw too many horrors. After Trafalgar Gabriel went to Madrid where he came to serve an actress, Pepita González. He is in love with Inés.
- Inés (15) is the girl who Gabriel is in love with. Inés works with her mother, Juana, a seamstress, but then Juana falls very sick and dies. Inés is worried that she will be destitute but when her uncle, the piest, is given a post, she can depend on him. Inés is not doña Juana's daughter, and when Gabriel learns that, he starts to suspect that she is the daughter Amaranta gave up when she was very young.
- Padre Celestino Santos del Melvar is Inés's uncle. After Juana dies, Celestino will take care of his niece.
- Amaranta is one of the women in Pepita's circle. Amaranta takes Gabriel with her and fills his head with ideas above his intention. When Gabriel realises that Amranta wants to use him as a spy, he refuses. Amaranta wants to destroy Lesbia and she takes hold of the letter which may be her failure. Gabriel discovers that as a young woman she fell in love with a young man who her family disapproved. Amaranta got pregnant and had a baby who she gave up. Gabriel now suspects that she may be Ines's real mother.
- Pacorro Chinitas is a scissor grinder who Gabriel befriends and whose advice he takes in great regard. He was married to a woman called 'La Primorosa' but he had to abandon her because she was terrible to him. 

CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL

- Pepita González is the actress who Gabriel works for. Pepita is in love with the actor Isidoro Maíquez, who loves someone else. She prepares her revenge when she uses a letter that Lesbia, the woman Isidoro is in love with, to create havoc. At the end of the book Isidoro guesses her real feelings, and he seems interested too.
- Isidoro Maiquez is the actor (real life) who Pepita is in love with. He is in love with Lesbia and gets upset when he discovers that Lesbia has feelings for someone else. 
- Doña Dominguita is Pepita's grandmother. 
- Doña Juana is the seamstress who works for Pepita, and it is through her that Gabriel meets Inés, her daughter. Doña Juana dies at the end of the book, and she confesses to her brother-in-love, Padre Celestino, that Ines is not her real daughter. 
-Lesbia (22) is one of the women belonging to Pepita's circle. Lesbia is very beautiful and has relatioships with other men who are not her husband, the Duke. He had a relationship with Isidoro Maíquez, but then she turned her affections to Mañara, a soldier.
- Juan de Mañara is the real guard who Lesbia is in love with.
