The book starts on Christmas Day 1916, and young Peter goes to find her sister, Sadie, in the middle of the night.
This year with Bobby dead and David in a dark mood, things are quite sombre, and Sadie makes an effort to cheer for her youngest brother. The next day they have dinner, but things are not very cheeful, and David refuses to join the dinner table, claiming that he can't make his way downstairs. He is suffering terrible nightmares, and Ethel is really good to him, staying awake until he falls asleep again.
Diana has spent Christmas in London with Rupert. Her baby is to be born in March, and even though she feels embarrassed to be seen this big, Rupert insists that they need to have fun.
Another year for the family. I wonder what will happen in these twelve months. I am raring to know what will happen to Edward and Beattie and their marriage.
