The Long, Long Trail 1917 - 2 (Pages 18 - 138)

 SPOILERS!!!

Edward is now engaged by the Ministry of Food to persuade people to turn their gardens into fields to grow food. The Germans have blocked the channels that supply Britain with food, so it is important for the country to farm the land. The government advises people to do voluntary rationing, but Edward thinks that there will be a time when it will compulsory. Edward goes around the area with a young man, Christopher Bedford. They get all kinds of responses, and some people are reluctant to destroy their gardens. Edward feels he has to set an example, and he talks to Munt, who is outraged to think of his flowers and fields destroyed, but Edwad doesn't give him an alternative. Edward, though, fails to persuade the Wroughtons who think that their estate is untouchable beause it has been there for generations.

I feel sorry for Edward because he shows his love to his wife whereas Beattie is betraying him in the worst possible way. Now Louis is in France, but they have talked about the end of the world and her leaving everything and moving to Kenya with him. Beattie's secret love is not so secret any more. Rupert runs into her and Louis when they are getting out of a taxi, and Beattie tells him that he is an old family friend, but Rupert feels that there is something fishy. Then when he runs into Laura, he tells her and Laura just says that Beatty's father was in the military and she must have acquaintances in the army.

Laura and Louisa have finally made up. When Laura returns on a leave, she goes to find her friend to discover that her aunt has died. Louisa feels lonely, and Laura finally convinces her that she needs to start her life. What she can do is sell her aunt's house and go with her to France, and Louisa finally agrees.

David's depression becomes worse when Sophy Oliphant tells him that she has agreed to marry Humprhrey and since David gave her the option of breaking off their engagement, she is taking it. The only person who seems to make him open up is Antonia Weston, and Beattie invites her to spend some time at the Elms. And now David is to spend a month at the Westons' and Ehel goes with him. Mr Weston is worried that his daughter may end up with her heart broken, but Antonia tells him that she knows that David only sees her as a friend, but she wants to help him recover and set him free for life again. I think that David has changed towards her and once when they had dinner at the Elms and Christopher Bedford was there, he didn't like when the man seemed to show interest in her.

Sadie is now nineteen, and Sanhill from the land army seems to have taken a shine to her, and he asks her out. Sadie accepts his invitation to go to the pictures and have dinner, but he tells Beattie that he is only a friend. The man Sadie is interested in is John Courcy.

Diana has had a baby boy, George, and Rupert is very proud. I think that Rupert's social life has not changed since he got married, and I think he follows his inclinations. Rupert has even mentioned to Diana that he never thought he would have a child. If he hadn't become Lord Dene, he would never have got married and had children. So now we know that he married Diana to get an heir to the family.
