The Long, Long Trail 1917 - 3 (Pages 138 - 203)

 SPOILERS!!!

Whenever Louis appears and Beattie forgets about everything but him, I feel very irritated. I can't understand how this one man means more than anything else in her life. She seems to care only about him and the child they  had together, David. Maybe she doesn't love Edward in the way she does Louis, but what about her other children. And it's indecent the way she almost didn't mourn Bobby. Louis wants them to go and live in South Africa when the war finishes, but he doesn't have any ties. Beattie tries not to talk about it, but if she were sure that she couldn't leave her family, she would have said so.

Some new things have happened. David has finally come to realise that he loves Antonia. Mr Weston and the Hunters are worried that David has no perspectives workwise. When they meet Mr Weston, the latter tells them that David is a brilliant man and he could be a private tutor while he recovers. Beattie says that he and Antonia could go and live with them as there are more possibilities there to get pupils. Besides, this gives her more time to keep David by her side. So the date is set.

And surprisingly Cook is now in love. Her sister has an operation, and she goes to her town, Folkestone, to look after her. Then when she is queuing to buy some food, there is some noise. A man approaches her, and before she knows what is happening, planes are dropping bombs. She wakes up in hospital and the man who pushed her and saved her life is there. His name is Fred McAusland from Australia, and he tells her that she is a fine woman and he liked her when he saw her queuing outside the shop. During the following week Joan allows him to take her for walks and the pictures. Fred has to return to his unit, but he wants them to marry after the war and then they will go to the war. Joan is totally bewildered because she had never thought that love could happen to her. When she returns to the Elms, she says nothing about Fred, and when he starts writing to her, she says that the letters come from her nephew.  This love story is a real surprise.
