The book starts on October 30, five years ago.
Police Officer Bobby Chin goes to collect his daughter, Elle, from his ex-wife's house. Jewel, his ex-wife, is not making things easy for him after the divorce, and her new boyfriend, Graham, seems to enjoy taunting him as well, because they know that the law protects Jewel. That day Bobby takes his daughter, Elle, to a Halloween maze. He is late, and the man in charge tells him that they only have 45 minutes. Then Elle says that she wants to play hide-and-seek, and even though Bobby tells him that they can't, she starts crying, so he tells her that it will be brief. Elle goes to hide while Bobby counts, and then when he tries to find her, she is nowhere to be found.
In present day Tracy is ready to go back to work after being on sick leave and maternity leave after the last case. She gets a nasty surprise when her boss, Nolasco, tells her that her position in the A-team has been filled by Maria Fernandez, and he can't dismiss her. So the only solution is that she replaces the cold case unit as Officer Art Nonzio is to retire. Tracy is upset and angry because she does not want to be relegated to a lower position. She reasons that she does not need the money, and it could be good to raise Daniella, but she knows that she needs to work and feel useful. I imagine that now Tracy will look into Elle's disappearance.
