REGULAR CHARACTERS
- Dovie Pearce Grant (42) lives with her father on Quail Crossings, the family farm. Dovie lost her husband, Simon, and her five-year-old daughter, Helen, on St Valentine’s Day when they had a car accident on their way to a dance. Dovie wasn’t with them at the time because she had a migraine. Dovie is still mourning them, and when her father brought the Brewers to the house a few years ago, she was all against them staying, but little by little she was won over by this good family. Dovie then fell for Gabe, a pilot who looks very much like Simon. At first Dovie thought she was doing something wrong by falling for Gabe, but she finally realisesd that she can love Simon and Gabe. In this book Dovie and Gabe marry.
- Gabriel Pierce (Gabe) is the pilot who Dovey fell in love with. Gabe tries to find Robert when he goes missing, and he eventually brings him home. Gabe and Dovery get married after he returns from Europe.
- James Murphy is Dovie’s father. He is an honest man with a golden heart. When in the first novel he met Bill Brewer and his siblings in the local café, he offered Bill a job on the farm. James grew fond of Bill and his siblings, and now the Brewers are part of his family. In this book James suffers a mild stroke, and he is not happy about having to reduce his activity.
- Bill Brewer (28)found himself in charge of his youngers siblings when their parents moved to California and left the children behind. For months Bill moved from place to place, using his truck as a mobile home for his family. Thanks to James’s generosity, Bill got a good job and a place where his siblings could be safe. Bill fell in love with Lou Ann Garber and they married at the end of the first book. Now Bill and Lou Ann have three children, Dean, Annabelle and Rose
- Lou Ann Brewer (27) is Bill's wife. Lou Ann is very sweet and kind.
- Dean Brewer is Bill and Lou Ann's son.
- Annabelle Brewer (3) is Bill and Lou Ann's daughter
- Rose Brewer (1) is Bill and Lou Ann's youngest child
- Alice Brewer (16) is Bill’s youngest sister. Alice is sweet and determined, and everybody loves her. She managed to melt Dovie’s heart in the first book and even got to tame Norman, the terrible goose that terrifies everybody. Alice likes studying and her intention is to go to college and become a teacher.
- Elmer Brewer (20) is Bill’s brother. He is quite shy and quiet. He and Tiny Clark have been friends since their first encounter even though they had ups and downs. Elmer fought the war, and when he ran into Tiny at Times Square, they decided to marry before going back home. When Dovery heard about it, she made them marry in church and have a celebration for the whole family. Elmer's experiences in the war affected more than he thought and he kept having nightmares and visions about a young soldier, Thomas Pope. When he decided to go and talk to Thomas's parents, he managed to calm down. Elmer and Tiny have a baby boy at the end of this book. Elmer also buys the local butcher's shop and now he runs it successfully.
- Tiny Clark (Mary) is Elmer's wife. Tiny is determined, energetic and a chatterbox.
- Benjamin Thomas Brewer is Tiny and Elmer's baby boy.
- Evalyn Smith Brewer (Evie) (26) is Bill’s sister. When Evalyn came to Quail Crossings, she was contrary and hostile, especially towards Dovie because she thought that they could find their parents. Five years later Evie returned from California where she had been living with her friend Harriet because they wanted to be actresses. Yet, she returned to Quail Crossings with a baby she claimed was hers. On the way there she met Robert Smith, who was going back to Knollwood to work on the farm his parents bad left him. Evalyn and Robert pretended they were married, and they eventually decided to marry for real. Months later Harriet turned up and she revealde she was the baby's real mother, but she died in the tornado. Evie now has a son too, Caleb. Evie suffers throughout the novel because Robert is missing in action, but she does not lose hope. Thankfully, Robert returns home months later after being in a prison in London when he was confused with a spy.
- Robert Smith is Evie's husband. . When Robert first met Bill, the latter did not hide his distrust, but Bill eventually realised that Robert was a good man. Robert returns home after being missing for months. He is happy to meet his son, who was born while he was fighting.
- Joy Smith (6) is the baby Harriet had, but when she neglected her, Evie looked after her and loved her as her own. Joy is lovely, talkative and determined.
- Caleb Smith (1) is Evie and Robert's son.
- Ellie Brewer is the youngest of the Brewers. She was abandoned by her parents at a doctor's office, claiming that she was going to die. Ellie survived but the people who took her in did not treat her right. As a consequence, she refused to talk. When she starts living with Dovie and the others, she is determined to gain herself a place in the family, and she does all the chores. Ellie almost dies when the local doctor, who was the person who mistreated her in the past, almost kills her. In the end Ellie talks and is happy to have find a place in the heart of the family.
- Jacob Henny (21) is the black boy that Alice helpedwhen he found him beaten up. Alice gets worried when Jacob does not write to her, so she and James goes to find him. They discover that Jacob was wounded in the war and lost a leg. Then his wife left him. Alice and James persuade him to return home with them, and he gets a job in the butcher's shop Elmer owns.
- Blu was Jacob Henry's wife, but she left him for another man.
- Mr Norman is the family's goose.
- Daisy is the family's pig
- Harriet Wheaton was Evalyn's friend and they decided to move to Los Angeles as they wanted to be actresses. Harriet got pregnant and had Joy, but she didn't want the responsibility, so she left. Almost a year later she returne to Quail Crossings and to ask for her baby back. Harriet died when a tree fell on her during a tornado.
- George and Kathleen Wheaton are Harriet's parents. They realise that Joy is their granddaughter, but they agree to keep quiet and let Evie raise Joy. Kathleen has become one of Evie's good friends.
- Frank Kelley is the bully who beat Jacob up along with his friends. He was a racist and claimeds that he was doing what his father wants. Frank Kelley was hurt during the tornado, and it was Jacob who helpeds him and his friends to find shelter. Frank goes to find Jacot at the butcher's job to talk to him. He wants to thank and apologise to him. He tells him that he is alive thanks to a black soldier who received the bullet that was directed to him, but the black man pushed him out of the way. Now Frank has moved out.
- Pastor Spaulding is the local priest
- Susan Spaulding is the pastor's wife.
- Annette is the owner of the local café.
- Laurence Dodson is a boy who goes to school with Alice, and they seem to be in competition about who does better. It seems that Alice is sweet on him.
- Charlotte Wheaton used to be Lou Ann’s best friend, but when Bill appeared in the first book , she got obsessed with him and did everything to trap him. Now she is married and has four children.
- Sara Clark is Tiny's mother is a good friend to Dovie. In this book she and her husband decide to move to Amarillo and leave the house to Tiny and Elmer. Tiny misses her terribly.
- Bud Clark is Tiny's father.
- Joan Garber is Lou Ann’s sister and Alice’s best friend.
- Hannah Garber is Lou Ann’s mother.
- David Garber is Lou Anna’s father. He is a bully and used to hit his wife and children. James and Bill warned him that if he touched his family again, they would make sure that he didn't do it again.
- Bud Clark is Tiny’s brother who was killed in the war.
- Ruth Clark is Sarah’s daughter.
- Simon Grant was Dovie’s husband. He died in a car accident.
- Helen Grant was Dovie's daughter. She died when she was in the car with her father.4
- Charles Garber (12) is Lou Ann’s brother.
- June Barner is James's other daughter. James tells the family that he and June fall out when she decided to marry a man he didn't approve and moved to New York. June didn't come to her mother's funeral, and when James went to see her in New York, she did not even let him see his three grandchildren.
- David Barner is June's husband.
- Virginia Evans, Shirley Manders, Doris Fisher are Alice's school friends.
CHARACTERS IN THIS NOVEL:
- Dr Hushton is the new local doctor. He turns out to be a horrible person and the man who took Ellie in and beat her up as well as his own family. When Ellie stands up to him, he tries to hurt him, and when Dovey defends her, Hushton hits Dovey with the shotgun and shoots Elmer. Hushton chases after Ellie and when he grabs her, he tries to push her into a hole full of snakes. Ellie defends herself, and Hushton ends up in the hole, but Ellie is compassionate and helps him out, and once again he tries to push her. Thankfully, Dovey appears and Hushton falls into the hole again and dies of snake poisoning.
- Colleen Waterman is from the United States children's bureau, and she brings Ellie to the Brewers.
- Thomas Pope was the young soldier who Elmer saw die in the war. Elmer promised to protect him, but one night Thomas and other soldiers sneaked in the dead of night into the Nazi field to steal a tank. Elmer found him wounded and tried to help him. He left Thomas in the trench to go for help, and that was the spot that was bombed and Thomas died. Elmer gets having nightmares about the death of Thomas because he was too shocked to say he had died. He then decides to go to talk to Thomas's parents and the army to tell them that Thomas is not missing, but dead, and he was a witness.
