New Book - Bleeding Heart Yard - Harbinder Kaur 3 - by Elly Griffiths (Pages 1 - 70)

First Published: 2022

Now Harbinder is a Detective Inspector after passing her exames, and her post is in London. So now she lives there, sharing a flat with two other women. This is progress in her job, but she misses her family.

The book starts with the narration of Cassie, who tells us about murdering someone years ago, which she still thinks about. She is married to Pete and they have two children, and she mentions how her husband goes to school reunion, but she has always avoided going to one. We also learn that Cassie is a police officer.

Cassie works in the unit that Harbinder leads. Harbinder is called as there has been a suspicious death during a school reunion. The dead person is Garfield Rice, who is an MP, and it seems that his death has been caused by an overdose. Cassie is one of the attendees, and she tells Harbinder that Gary and she went together to school, but she can't believe that he used drugs. Apart from Cassie, there are other people: Kris Foster, a pop star, Henry Steep, a labour MP, Izzy Istar, an actress, and Anna Vance, a language teacher living in Italy. Apart from these people, who were friends in school, there is Archie Flowers, the deputy head, and and Aisha Mitri, a doctor. The reunion was an idea of the headteacher, Sonoma Davies, who is an ex-student and was in the same year as Cassie and the others, but she didn't attend the reunion as she had to go to her daughter's school function.

Harbinder investigates the history of the school, and she discovers that there was a death years ago. David Moore was an A-level student who died when he fell on the railway tracks. Actually, this is the person who Cassie allegedly killed. Back then Cassie was with her friends, and Anna claimed that Michael had tried to rape her. Cassie said that he did rape her when they were dating. They started talking about killing him or giving him a lesson. So what they would do was to bring Michael to a disused underground station with the excuse of drugs, and they would give him a fright by pretending that they would push him. It seems that the fright ended up in tragedy and Michael died. That is what Cassie fears: that the police find out the truth.

The tests come back, which confirm that Gary did not die of an overdose. There is some cocaine remains on his nostrils, but nothing was found in his bloodstream, which means that the cocaine was just a cover. A bump was found in his head, and the pathologist believes that he was injected insulin, which killed him.

Harbinder talks to Anna Vance, who did not see much that night. Yet, he overheard Gary talking to someone about something that nobody knows, which may hurt everybody, especially Izzy. Anna tells Harbinder that she thinks that the person who Gary was talking to was the headteacher, Sonoma, who was supposedly in a family do.
