The novel starts with a conversation between Francesca and Dan.
They have been friends for many years, and it is obvious that Francesca is in love with him. Both of them are married to different people, and Dan and his wife Olivia are unhappy because they can't have children. After a few IVF rounds, Olivia's eggs seem unable to seed, and they have no money for more treatment. Francesca tells him that she is willing to give him money. Dan says that Olivia wants to use donated eggs, but Dan disapproves because he wants to know what his children come from. Francesca offers her own eggs, and when Dan says that Olivia wouldn't agree, she suggests he keep that a secret. When Dan agrees to lie to Olivia, she feels this is a triumph.
Six months later after having the donated eggs implanted, Olivia finds out that she is pregnant, and she can't be happier.
We discover more about Francesca. She lives in America with her husband, Walt, and her children are in a boarding school in Switzerland, so she feels lonely. NOw Walt wants to buy a stately home in England, which Francesca disapproves of because it will mean a lot of reonvations and dealings with the law, and that will mean more work for her. Yet, Walt is adamant they buy the house.
This is an interesting start, and I wonder what will happen next.
