The man who committed suicide in the first chapters was a friend of the Russian billionaire who is the neighbour living above David. Later we discover that his name is Martin. David discovers that his flat is very tidy, but something is different. The rug has been changed, and when he moves it back to his place, he finds a wet stain, which he thinks that Mihaela left when she spilled something. David is sent a new cleaner when Mihaela does not return to the agency again.
The novel then takes us to the US Virgin Islands. A very luxurious yacht is moored there, and Erin is the first mate. She and the captain, Marius, are usually alone on the boat, but now they expect the family who own to turn up soon. That is why they also expect extra staff. The owner is Stepan Purumov, who owns the apartment in Paris where the suicide took place. The staff arrive the next day, and among them there is Marissa, the chief steward, and Tommy, security.
In London Kai, who used to have relative relevance in the music industry but now is unemployed after Covic. His brother, Marley, tells him that he has arranged for someone to see him for a job, and Kai agrees to see him the following week. Yet, when Kai, who is dating Zina, an art student, goes to see her, she is upset because her parents want her to be with them while they travel on their yacht. Zina is the daughter of Stepan Purumov, and she does not like her family. So she asks Kai to come with her, and Kai accepts.
Kai is surprised to see how rich Zina's family are. He feels like a fish out of water with just Zina and her parents. Stepan arrives, and it seems that he is worried about his daughter's safety after Martin's death. We imagine that he does not think it was suicide. Stepan wants Zina to leave London, and he will get her her own art gallery in Russia. Zina is not happy at all.
Stepan has arrived with his own security guard, Dimitri, and Tommy is not happy. Erin at the helm when Stepan and Dimitri talk, but she can't understand Russian. Yet, Marissa is there too, and when they leave, Erin asks her what they were talking about, and Marissa tells her that Stepan thinks that Tommy is not genuine.
