SPOILERS!!!
Sonsoles and Serrano feel the attraction between them grow more and more. Both can't stop thinking about the other, and evey time they meet at a social gathering, they can't pretend they are indifferent. It is Sonsoles who takes the initiative when she asks for an appointment to see him. Her excuse is a request to bring King Alfonso XIII to die in Spain. Serrano can't make the decision as it is Franco who should decide. Then when they are in the lift on their way downstairs, they kiss for the first time. I wonder what will happen now.
The novel is full of historic references, and we learn more about Serrano. He starts gaining more and more importantce, and his sister-in-law feels bitter about it. Serrano is not having it easy in his dealings with HItler. The Nazis want Spain to join the war, and Serrano has to come with reasonable arguments against it and at the same time prevent them from marching into the country.
