This is a novel based on true facts.
It starts with Carmen Díaz de Rivera talking to a journalist, Ana Romero, and she tells her the story of her parents. In 1940 Sonsoles Icaza, her mother, who was pregnant of her third child, is at the Ritz, a guest alongside her husband at a party to celebrate Ramón Serrano Suero, Franco's brother-in-law, as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs. From the first Sonsoles feels dran to this very attractive man.
It is at this point that Serrano is in conversation with the Nazis. He and Franco want to remain neutral in the war as the country is weakened after a terrible Civil War, but Himmler and Hitler want Spain to show their loyalty and join the war.
