Sonsoles cannot stop thinking about Serrano after their two encounters exchanging kisses. One in the lift and the other in his office. She longs for him, but Serrano is in the middle of too many affairs. The Nazis give Spain an ultimatum to join the war, so he and Franco have to travel to Italy and meet Mussolini to use him as a mediator. Then when he returns to Spain, he learns that many factions want him out of the way. Some old school Falangists think that he is not doing a good job, and there are German and British factions who are against him too. His friend even tells him that some people may want him dead.
Sonsoles is sick and hardly has energy to leave the bed when Serrano remains silent. So she takes matters in her own hands and calls him. Serrano responds passionately, and they agree to meet somehwere where they can be alone. The chosen place is the office of a lawyer, and when they are together, they become intimate. Sonsoles leaves him, fully aware that this is not enough. She wants more even though she knows getting entangled with such a powerful man, related to Franco, endangers not only herself but her whole family.
