New Book - Lady Susan by Jane Austen (Pages 1 - 58)

First Published:  January 1, 1871

This is an epistolary novel in which several characters exchange correspondence.

Lady Susan is a widow who has a sixteen-year-old daughter, Frederica. Lady Susan has a bad reputation for being a flirt and heartbreaker. Now after some social incident she decides to visit her brother-in-law and his wife, Mrs Vernon. The thing is that Lady Susan tried to prevent his brother-in-law to marry Catherine Vernon, so the beginning of the relationship is not good.

Catherine agrees that Lady Susan is beautiful and intelligent, but she cannot deign to welcome her. Then her brother Reginald comes to visit, and to her shock she witnesses how Reginald falls pray to Susan's charms. She even fears that he may want to marry her, so she writes to her mother about the danger, and Reginald gets a letter from his father, and he assures that he has no intention to marry.

Then Lady Susan gets a letter from the school where Frederica is, saying that she tried to run away, so Mr Vernon goes to pick the girl up because the school headmistress does not want her to stay in the school. Lady Susan is very angry, and she despises her own daughter. What she wants is for her to marry a man called James Martin, but Frederica hates her. When Frederica gets to Churchill where her mother is, she feels drawn to Reginald, and her mother notices her. Then one day James Martin appears to Frederica's consternation, and she asks Reginald for help, so he agrees to help her and asks his sister to tell James Martin to leave. Then Reginald has to leave himself.

I think this novel is quite entertaining. Lady Susan is horrible to her daughter and I wonder what will happen in the end.
