9. THE CHAMPION OF THE WORLD
First Published: 1959
Claud and Gordon work in a filling station. Claud and his father have always done some poaching, and Gordon seems to have something against Victor Hazel, a brewer who has come into money and has some land with pheasants. Around this time he invites rich men to come shooting. Claud tells Gordon that his father taught him that the key to poach pheasants is raisings, and there are three methods to hunt them. Then Gordon thinks that a good idea would be to use the sleeping pills that he was prescribed recently. If they added part of the pill and the pheasants ate it, they would drop. Claud thinsk that it is a good idea and they start working together.
That evening Claud and Gordon walk to the clearing where the pheasants are. There is a keeper, but Claud says that he will go home soon. Then they come across another keeper who is suspicious, and when he leaves, Gordon tells him that there is no danger. The keeper will be waiting for them outside the filling station, but they will have nothing as they will leave the pheasants at Bessie Organ's. Bessie is the vicar's wife.
The plan works and they manage to collect over a hundred pheasants, and when they return home, the keeper does not find anything. The next day Bessie is to deliver the pheasants to the filling station, hidden in her baby's pram. The two men wait for her, and Gordon realises that Bessie is walkign funny, too fast. Then one pheasant appears and then another, and Gordon realises that the effects of the pills have worn off, and they pheasants are waking up. Bessie is in a panic and grabs her baby. Then the pheasants gather around the filling station.
This is not my favourite kind of story, but it is funny too.
