A Christmas Guest 3 - The End (Pages 69 - end)

RATING. GOOD

This is an interesting story as a cantankerous character like Mrs Mariah Ellison appears more sympathetic.

Mrs Ellison goes to visit Maude's family to tell them about her demise. That is how she meets Maude's two sisters, Bedelia and Agnes, and their two husbands Arthur McCout and Zachary Sullivan, and Bedelia's son, Randolph and his wife, Clara. What she discovers is that the key to Maude's death is in the past. What she learns is that Bedelia and Zachary had a relationship, but she left him when Arthur appeared on the scene. Then Arthur stopped seeing Bedelia for a while because she fell for Maude, but he got back with Bedelia and got married. Mrs Ellison discovers that Bedelia was pregnant, and Arthur felt obliged to stand by her, and that hurt Maude, which is the reason why she went travelling for forty years. Mrs Ellison also discovers that Arthur is not really Randolph's father, but it is Zachary's. And she also reveals that Bedelia gave her sister peppermint water which was poisoned and some macadamia nuts, knowing that her sister would drink the water for indigestion after eating the nuts.

Mrs Ellison leaves them with the truth and the responsibility of doing what they deem fair. The woman leaves the family, realising that she did like Maude and admired her, and she arrives at the house where Joshua and Caroline live with a more affable spirit.
