A Christmas Guest 2 (Pages 20 - 69)

 SPOILERS!!!

Joshua receives a letter from her aunt Bedelia, saying that they have been surprised by the arrival of her sister, Maude, and they can't take her in. That means that Caroline and Joshua should welcome Maude so that she could spend Christmas with them. Mariah is not happy, and when she asks if the reason why Maude can't stay with her sister is because they have a small house, Caroline says that they have several bedrooms, but they have special guests and can't offer Maude their home.

Maude arrives. She has been travelling for years, and Caroline and Joshua are interested in her accounts. She is all enthusiastic about the places she has seen. Mariah doesn't like the woman and hates how she is enthusiastic even about the spot where they are. At dinner Maude produces some Macadamina nuts, and Mariah says that she shouldn't touch them as they are not easy to digest. Maude agrees but she loves them, and she mentions that she has some peppermint water for her stomach.

The next day a maid wakes up Mariah suddenly, saying that Maude is dead. Mariah doesn't believe her, and she goes to check. Mariah has indeed died, and when the doctor comes, he says that it was heart failure. Mariah is more upset than she could have believed. Maude didn't look sick at all, and she can't believe she died of natural causes. Then she remembers the peppermint tea, and she discovers the empty bottle. The water came from a local apothecary, and she starts suspecting that maybe one of her relatives gave Maude the water to kill her.

When Caroline suggests they write a letter to Maude's family, Mariah is certain that Maude may have been murdered, and she wants to find out the truth like her granddaughter, Charlotte. So she volunteers to go and deliver the news in person. So she goes there, and the person who receives her is Bedelia, Maude's sister. Bedelia reacts in the expected way, shocked and upset. Mariah hopes that the weather will make her stay there for a few days, and that way she can discover who killed Maude.

Very interesting twist. I wonder who killed Maude and why. I imagine that the motive must be money.
