In this novella we have some of the characters from the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt series.
Mariah Ellison, who is Charlotte's cantankerous grandmother, went to live with her granddaughter Emily after her daughter-in-law, Caroline, married Joshua, an actor twenty years younger than her, after the death of her husband and Mariah's son.
Emily announces that she and her new husband is to spend Christmas in France, and Mariah is horrified. Emily says that she has arranged for her to spend the holiday with Caroline and Joshua, who have rented a house in Kent. Mariah is upset and angry, but she has no option than travel to Kent.
