It is 14 December 1890, and Clarice Corde is on her way to Cottisham, Hertforshire.
Her husband, Dominic, is a vicar. They have been married just over a year, and Dominic took his vows late in life. Dominic works for a curate in London, but now he is sent to this village for three weeks as the vicar has taken a vacation.
They settle in the vicarage, and when the lord of the manor, Sir Peter Connaught, comes to visit them the next day, from his words Clarice realise that there is something fishy in the vicar's decision to leave the village for three weeks.
