Clarice and Dominic learn a few things about the vicar, Mr Wynter. When Sir Peter Connaught from the manor visits them, the housekeeper, Mrs Wellbeloved is surprised because the man never came to see the vicar. They also learn that John Boscomte was the vicar's helper until six months ago, and Clarice wonders what happened between the vicar and John.
Clarice also notices some things in the house that do not make sense. First, she finds the vicar's personal bible, which he should have taken with him. When she decides to send him the bible, she realises that the address they have is not a hotel any longer because she knows the area, and nobody knows where he went. She also notices that the vicar, who had gone away to enjoy his off time to enjoy painting, has left his pencils, drawing paper and easel.
That day Clarice has to pick up some coal from the basement. When she is there, the cat and the dog run to a second basement, and she sees a lump on the floor. It is the dead body of Mr Wynter. Clarice calls Dr Fitzgerald, who says that the vicar had a heart attack. Dominic arrives and is shocked to discover that the vicar never left the vicarage. When Dominic and the doctor go to pick up a vehicle to move the body, Clarice cleans the body, and she notices that the man has bruises and there is congealed blood in the back of his head. When the doctor and Dominic return, she tells Dominic, and when they tell the doctor, he is not very welcoming and tells Dominic not to spread rumours and stick to his business.
Clarice is certain that someone killed the vicar, and she and Dominic agree that they have to discover the truth. Clarice studies the accounts, and she realises that there are some continuous inaccuracies of small quantities that the vicar replaced himself. She wonders if this is relevant. That is why she decides to go and see Mr John Boscombe, who tells her that he knew about the inaccuracies, but Clarice realises that he didn't want to say anything more.
Who killed the vicar? Dominic thingks that the vicar knew something about someone who was afraid that his/her secret may be revealed and that is why the vicar was killed.
