Gracie Phipps, who is thirteen, is walking home in 1883 when she sees a young child with a worried expression.
When she asks the girl, she learns that her name is Minnie Maude Mudway. She is trying to find Charlie, her donkey, and she mentions that her uncle Ralph has been murdered. Gracie says taht she cna't help her because she needs to go home.
The next day Gracie, feeling guilty, tries to find Minnie Maude, and when she finds her, Minnie gives her more details. She says that her uncle, who was a rag-and-bone man, was found dead by Jimmy Quick, who is also a rag-and-bone man, and Charlie, the donkey, was gone. Apparently, Ralph had done the route that Jimmy took, so Gracie thinks that maybe someone wanted to kill Jimmy but murdered Ralph instead.
