Noel Pinson is a lawyer who enjoys a good mystery. Mr Pierce from CID visits him and tells him about something that happened during the Nine Muses Ball. Miss Joan Immington has always enjoyed the Nine Muses Ball, but she missed it a couple of years after her mother died. This year she went dressed up as Joan of Arc.When she was dancing with a gentleman, someone clumsily bumped into them, and then she noticed that her ring was missing.
It was not found, and the gentleman Robert Carleon talked to the police but nothing was found. The next day Pierce, suspecting the man, went to his hotel and he said that the ring that he was wearing was the one missing, but he produced a couple of documents proving that the ring belonged to him.
It was Mr Pinson who resolved the mystery. It was Mr Carleon who had stolen the ring. The thing is that Robert Carleon and Joan's mother had been engaged years ago, but they quarrelled and fell out, and then Marie, Joan's mother, married someone else. When Mr Immington died, Carleon got in touch with her again, and even asked her to marry him, but they had to wait for the mourning period to finish, but the woman died. Then Carleon came to the dance because he wanted to recover the ring that he could keep as a memento from his beloved.
