Grainger comes to ask Pinson about a mystery. Mr Rooth and his wife moved to a house, and then she started receiving threatening letters. Then Mrs Rooth disappeared, and when Mr Rooth and the neighbour tries to find her, they only found the cardigan that she wanted to wear, some shred from her dress and a piece of paper.

Pinson is sure that the mystery lies in Mr Rooth, and from the paper that was found in the place, he discovers a place where to find information. He travels to Le Coq in Belgium, and he discovers Mr and Mrs Rooth. The man is surprised when he is approached by that name. Mr Rooth explains that he and his wife met in India, and they were threatened to death for some reason, and they had to flee. They considered faking a suicide, but they decided this would be much better.

Pinson returns but she keeps quiet about what he has discovered. Grainger says that someone from India came to the house, but thinking that this man was the author of the threatening letters, he threatened to call the police, and the man fled.
