SPOILERS!!!
London sends Scotland Yard. Di Basil Blaney and DS Ken Wilkins come to Exeter, feeling superior, but they do not seem to find out much more than Chops and Wilson. They visit Jack Finch in prison; the man used to be a bank robber, but he tells them that murder is not his method.
Fearing for the children after the article in the newspaper, Chops sends a constable to the house to keep watch. Everybody thinks that the criminals must have left the area, but they need to take precautions just in case.
Carol has now joined the Women Auxiliaries, and she is to drive ambulances as there is a shortage of drivers. She passes the test with flying colours, and she will work shifts that allow her to look after the children as well. As it is the Christmas season, Carol decides that the children could start going to the school in January, but she takes them to see the schoolmaster, Mr Jonathan Darby, who is amiable and kind to the children, and Mrs Adams, who teaches the younger children.
Charles has tried to escape once again, but he was recaptured. Now he is to be sent to Colditz.
