The narrator of this novel is Prue Sarn, who lives in a village near the Sarn Lake.
She tells us about her brother Gideon, who has a terrible temper just like their father and who later in life fell for a local girl, Jancis Beguildy. Prue says that their father made them go to church; the service was just once a month. Sometimes they played truant and went to play conkers with Jancis, and if their father found out, he would beat them up. When Gideon was seventeen, his father got angry to discover that he had lied about going to church. Gideon stood up to him and pushed him, and the older man had a heart attack, and he died.
I have just read a few page, but I am really loving the novel.
