The book starts by describing Sweeney Todd, a barber in Fleet Street.
Then a man who has arrived in London, intending to see the fiancée of Mark Ingestrie, who was his friend and has lost his life. The man wants to shave and goes to Sweeney Todd's barbershop, and we understand that this man is killed after he tells Todd that he wants to talk to Johanna, the daughter of a spectacle-maker, and whose fiancé died at sea.
