The String of Pearls: Sweeney Todd 2 (Pages 30 - 152)

SPOILERS!!!

The man who went into Sweeney Todd's barber shop and didn't come out had a dog, and the animal swims to the ship where his owner came. The officers there get alarmed to see the dog alone, and they follow the dog that leads them to the barber shop. The man tells them that it is true that the man (Mr Thornhill) came to his shop for a shave, but he left. Sweeney says that he saw that there were some ruffians outside when Thornhill left. Colonel Jeffrey decides to stay and talk to the lady that Thornhill had come to see. The dog remains there, near the barber shop, and nobody can make him leave.

Colonel Jeffrey goes to see Johanna Oakley, who is afraid that her beloved is lost, and Jeffery confirms her fears. Jeffery tells her that Mark Ingestrie decided to join a ship in an adventure after someone promised him a fortune. The ship sunk, and Colonel Jeffery tells her that one survivor was Thornhill, who wanted to talk to her on behalf of Mark and he brought him a string of pearls that Mark had given him. Johanna is devastated, and Jeffery tells her that Thornhill is now missing, but he wants to investigate and find him. Johanna wants to see him again when he can bring her news of Mr Thornhill. Then at home Johanna realises that Thornhill must be Mark; he must have changed his name to avoid his uncle, who he had argued with. She reasons that if Mark didn't know if he or another fellow would die or survive, why would he give Thornhill the pearls or tell him to come to give her the news.

Johanna lives with her parents and find their scenes funny. Mr Oakley is sick and tired of his wife entertaining Mr Lupin, a parson who seems to be using the woman to get food and drink. When Mrs Oakley tells Johanna that she thinks that she should marry Mr Lupin, Johanna is incensed and refuses flatly. Then her father comes with her cousin, Big Ben, a beefeater, who threatens Lupin and the parson leaves scared. Then Oakley and Ben tell Mrs Oakley that they want to eat sausages, and when the woman comes back, they start to eat, but they feel sick. Mrs Oakley has poisoned the sausages.

The novel also introduces Mrs Lovett, who runs a shop selling meat pies, which are very popular for their wonderful taste. Mrs Lovett is not as pleasant as she appears to be, and we discover that the person she uses to make the pies is a slave that can't leave the premises. When a man, Jarvis Williams, a poor man, comes asking her for a job, the woman agrees and makes him sign a contract, accepting that he must never leave the basement. Williams agrees as the woman tells him that if one day he wants to stop working for her, he can leave, but I think that won't be so.
