Londres. 1891- 2 (Pages 28 - 112)

SPOILERS!!!

Sherlock Holmes appears in the novel as well as Professor Moriarty. Holmes is being hounded by Moriarty, who wants Sherlock dead. Moriarty is in a leper house, run by monks, and now one of his minions, Sergeant McEisner, who works for the police, tells him that he has been sent to search for Daniel Frederiksen as suspect in the disappearance of four girls who have vanished. These are the chancellor's granddaughter, the Canterbury archbishop's niece, the Prime Miniser's goddaughter, and the queen's granddaughter. They first go to the vapour house, but he is not there. then they go to the Hagenbeck zoo, where people of different ethnias are displayed. He is not there either.

Cox, the grave robber, who we are introduced at the beginning of the novel, has been having problems selling a pendant that he found with a corpse. We know that this man had a normal life years ago. He was a university professor, but then he was accused of raping the dean's daughter, so he was dismissed and his life went from bad to worse after that.

Then one night when he returns to his lodgings, some men are waiting for him and give him a beating. He wakes up in the part of the prison reserved for children. Then he notices two men, who introduce themselves as Inspector Gregson and Inspector Lestrade. They propose something to him, and then Cox is introduced to Lord and Lady Dilke. Lestrade says that their daughter has been kidnapped and they want their help because it seems that the kidnappers are also grave robbers, so Cox can help. Lady Rambalda is someone who Cox used to know. She is the dean's daughter and the reason why Cox was dismissed.

I still have many questions because some parts are a bit confusing for me. I don't know who Daniel Frederiksen is, and what role Moriarty has in this mystery.
