The novel starts in 2005. The narrator tells us about James, her husband, and how she had problems in loving her children.
Then at present time there is an article about an uproar because Kate Reynolds is being released from jail and is coming to live close to where her victim lived. Kate is now twenty-four, but when she was a teenager, she killed Naomi Andrews, and her mother Anthea is loudly protesting about having her daughter's killer nearby.
