The restaurant where Erika and Igor are at the beginning of the novel is in OXO tower in London. The Oxo Tower is a building with a prominent tower on the south bank of the River Thames in London. The building has mixed use as Oxo Tower Wharf containing a set of design, arts and crafts shops on the ground and first floors with two galleries, Oxo Bargehouse and Oxo Gallery. The Oxo Tower Restaurant, Bar and Brasserie is on the eighth floor, which is the roof-top level with fine and casual dining.

Erika lives in Blackheath. Blackheath is an area in Southeast London, straddling the border of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Borough of Lewisham. Known for its expansive heath of the same name, tranquil Blackheath attracts families for its easy city commute and village feel.

Erika's police station is in Lewisham. Lewisham is an area of southeast London.

The way the victims are murdered matches the Burke and Hare murders. The Burke and Hare murders were a series of sixteen murders committed over a period of about ten months in 1828 in Edinburgh. They were undertaken by William Burke and William Hare, who sold the corpses to Robert Knox for dissection at his anatomy lectures. 

The second victim was found in a flat near Greenwich Park. Greenwich Park is a former hunting park in Greenwich and one of the largest single green spaces in south-east London. 

The third victim, who actually is the first, was found in his home in Barnes. Barnes  is a district in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames in south-west London.
