A six-year-old girl goes missing from her bedroom in Surrey.
The local police seem to make no progress, and the press announces that they are to downgrade the case. The reality is that the case has been assigned to a special international unit in London. The detective in charge is DI Rachel Prince and her partner DS Mark Brickall. There has been a change as the girl's father, Gavin, is now missing.
Rachel reads about the case. The mother, Michelle, called the police when she discovered her daughter was not in her bedroom, and the French window downstairs was opened. Rachel finds it interesting that from the first moment Michelle said that Lola had been abducted. She and her husband were estranged, and she claimed that he could be violent. Michelle also said that that night she woke at 3 in the morning and saw a man outside, wearing a hood. A neighbour also said to have seen two men ouside, and another a van. Now the father is nowhere to be found, and the family don't know. His alibi for the nigh when Lola was missing was simply that he was in his flat.
Rachel is also worried about some calls she is getting from Stuart Richie, who we still don't know who he is, but the thing is she is not picking up.
