SPOILERS!!!
Esme and Guy's marriage goes from bad to worse. What she wants is a child, but even though they try a couple of times, Guy is not able physically. Esme thinks that he is not interested in her either. He suffers from nightmares after his terrible experience in the war. He was buried alive and found himself surrounded by dead bodies and members. Esme tries her hardest, but Guy is difficult. His behaviour becomes worse and more erratic. So he tells her to stop having visitors; he doesn't want her to go out, and he cuts the telephone line; the gardener leaves because he is afraid as Guy has a gun; and he has something against Hannah, the maid.
Esme does not know what to do, so she decides to go and see Dr Alasdair Brodie, who we discover had considered declaring his love for her, but then she married Guy. Esme gets to his house, and she tells him everything. Dr Brodie says that Guy is not going to improve as he has a mental condition, and he should be in an institution, but this is something he won't do. Then Dr Brodie can't help but tell her how he feels, and Esme realises that she loves this man, and they kiss. Brodie says that since they haven't had relations, she has grounds to have an annulment, so he advises her to go and see her lawyer. I wonder what will happen.
