Esme has a exhibition of her paintings in London, and Guy refuses to go with her. So she decides to stay overnight. Dr Brodie goes to see the exhibition, which is not rare as he has been to other of her exhibitions before. Almost at the end of the night there is a warning about a bombardment, and Esme and Brodie go to an underground to wait for the danger to pass. The danger makes Esme realise that life is short, and when Dr Brodie escorts her to her hotel, she tells the receptionist that she needs a double room as her husband has decided to stay with her. It is during that night that they give free rein to their love.
Esme is nervous to face Guy, worried that he would notice something different, but he is indifferent. Guy goes from bad to worse as he is convinced that they are surrounded by German spies, and he keeps watch all day, and he even has a bunk bed downstairs, fearing that someone may break into the house during the night.
Esme feels unwell and she can't hardly keep any food down, so Dr Brody is finally called. We know from previous chapters that Esme was pregnant, so I imagine that is why she is feeling under the weather.
