We discover that Jean and Anne are mother and daughter. In the humorous way the author uses we are shown that both these women are not very likeable.
In Jean's memories we are told that she got pregnant, which she did not want, and when she had Anne, she didn't bond with her, and she admits that she didn't have much love to show her. After having the baby, she started working in a shop and left the baby with a neighbour who could not have babies. Jean seemed smitten with the owner of the shop, who excited her more than poor, good Jim. Then she got pregnant again, and she had a new girl, Jessica. This is intriguing because we have no notion that old Anne has a sister and I wonder what happened to this girl.
Anne gets a call, telling her that her mother is in a coma, and she knows she has to go to Blackpool to be with her mother. Anne is not a happy woman. Her son despise her, and her husband is not very sympathetic either. We discover that Anne calls her mother weekly, but she hardly visits her or invites her to stay at hers. In her thoughts we can see that Anne looks down on her mother, and she realises that over the years she has been unkind to her.
