The book alternates between two points of view: Anne's and Jean's.
Anne Armitage is a middle-aged woman who now feels discontented with her life nowadays. She is married to Paul, an earn, nose and throat specialist, and they have two teenage sons, Nat and Julian. Now that the children have grown up, they don't need her, and Anne feels unhappy. Besides, the children have not lived up to her expectations. All Nat wants is going to the pub, and Julian is indifferent too.
The other point of view is Jean, an eldely lady who is in a coma in the hospital after being run over by a motorbike. Jean remembers her life. Her older brother died in a motorbike accident when she was a child. Jim Collins, who later was her husband, found him, and Brian died in his arms. After that, her parents were never the same. Jim and Jean got married. Jean then got pregnant.
I wonder if these two women are related in some way...
