New Book - The Scholar - Cormac Reilly 2 - by Dervla McTiernan (Pages 1 - 58)

First Published: February 18, 2019

The book starts by telling us that a twelve-year-old girl, Carline Darcy, was at a playdate when she heard on the television that her father had died in an avalanche while he was skiing.

Carline is picked up by her au-pair, Marie, who conforts her. That day Carline decides to go and see her grandfather, John Darcy, who is a millionaire and owner of a pharmaceutical company, and it seems that she doesn't have a relationship with him. Carline tells him that she doesn't want to live with her mother, who she only sees two or three times a year. Carline says that she wants to live with her present au-pair or whoever he hires to look after her.

The novel moves forward in time. DS Melanie Hacket talks to her boss, Brian Murphy, because she is snowed under with work, and she says that some of his colleagues like Cormac could take some of her cases. It seems that after the last case Cormac has been disciplined and has simply taken cold cases. Murphy agrees to give Cormac some of her cases, but Melanie is not happy as the case she has worked most on is one Cormac should take over.

Melanie and Cormac meet at the pub, and she tells him about Murphy's decision. She says that she doens't like the fact that Cormac will take the Henderson case, but it is true that she is not making much progress. Cormac then gets a call from Emma, his partner, and she tells him that she has found a dead body. Cormac and Melanie go to the university campus where Emma is, and she shows them the body. It is a woman who has been run over, and her face is totally smashed. The only thing Emma tells Cormac is that she has identified the jacket the victim was wearing, and she thinks that the woman is Carine Darcy.

The technical team arrives, and an identity card is found on the victim, and the name is Carline Darcy. Cormac finds out where the young woman lived and drives there. A woman who identifies herself as Valentina, opens the door, and when Cormac tells her about Carline's death, the woman excuses herself for a minute and goes to a room. When she returns, another woman follows her. This woman says that she is Carline Darcy and she is not dead. When Cormac asks her how her identity card was found on the victim, she says that she lost it in October, and when Cormac says that the woman who died was wearing a luxurious jacket, Carline says that the jacket is not hers. When Cormac leaves, Carline is left with Valentia and her other flatmate Mark Wardle, and from the conversation we gather that she lied about the jacket. Why?

I am curious to know who the dead woman is and why she had Carline's identify card and jacket.
