The Scholar 2 (Pages 58 - 148)

SPOILERS!!!

One of the cases that Cormac takes over from Carrie is the Henderson case. Bob Henderson is a bank worker, married with three children. His eldest son started to act out, and his teacher talked to him, and the boy said that he was afraid of his father. That started a police investigation, and when the police go to the house, they find the man on the roof. They search the house and find several canisters of carbon dioxide connected to a series of pipes under the flooring. It is clear that Bob wanted to kill his children and maybe his wife. He was arrested, and now the police are afraid that his wife, Lucy, plotted this with him, so they need to make her talk. As a precaution, her sister is now living there. Corman and a garda, Moira, go to the house, but Cormac realises that Lucy Henderson is in tranquilisers and it is useless to keep asking her questions. So he goes to talk to her sister, asking her to make sure that the next time they come his sister is off the tranquilisers.

Cormac needs to find out who the woman who was run over is, but he is not closer to knowing the truth. Then when he is away, a boy, Paul Bartlett, comes to the station to report that his sister is missing. Carrie talks to him, and he says that he usually talks to his sister every day and she hasn't called in days and she doesn't answer her phone. Paul hints that his parents don't care about his sister, Della. He also says that he was in her flat and waited all night but she didn't turn up. And when he went to the bar where she works, the people there claim that they don't know Della.

It is the next day that Cormac learns about this, and he and Carrie go to talk to the mother, who doesn't seem concerned about her daughter, and she claims that her concern is for her other daugher who is Down Syndrome. When they are returning to the station, Carrie tells Cormac that there are rumours about Emma and she wants to know if he should lead the case. Then Cormac tells her the story of Emma. Her father had an investment fund with several partners, which made him very rich, but then a few years later he decided to leave the fund, and his partners stayed and there were new members. Then the crisis hit and many lost everything, and some blamed Richard Sweeney. One man was particularly cruel, Padraig Flynn, who went after the family. Then one day he turned up at the house and beat up Emma. And then her sister Roisin appeared, and the man was strangling her when Emma took a knife and cut his throat. Cormac says that it was a case of self-defence, and he knows that there are rumours about her, but this is the truth.
