The Scholar - Facts

The novel is set in Galway. Galway is Ireland's fourth-largest city and cultural capital, located on the western coast where the River Corrib meets Galway Bay.

At the beginning of the book Carline learns that her father has died in the Glacier du Pisaillas. Glacier du Grand Pisaillas is a high-altitude glacier located in the French Alps, near the Italian border, sitting on the western face of the Aiguille Pers and Pointe du Montet.

Della's computer had a sticker of Jean Grey, an X-men character. Jean Elaine Grey is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, usually those featuring the X-Men, a group of superheroes of which she is a founding member.

This is the vocabulary I have learnt:

- Ratty: Old, worn-out, ragged, dirty, or poorly maintained.

- gub: the "mouth"

- clodhopper: an awkward, clumsy person

- toot one's own horn: to talk proudly about yourself, your skills, or your achievements.

-run to the ground: To find, track down, or capture a person or thing after a long, exhaustive search or investigation
