SPOILERS!!!
Salvador wants Pipaón to join the liberal cause and the revolution, and Pipaón assures him that he supports him. Then he tells him to follow him ou of the house, and he discovers that the servant who was a traitor in his household is Doña Fe, who he trusted completely.
Doña Fé takes them to a part of the house where there is a hidden door, which she open. There is an old man on the other side, who guides them through some gloomy rooms, and he is told that these are the Inquisition dungeons, but both Salvador and the old man tell Pipaón that the Inquisition is pitiful nowadays, and there are only a few inmates, who spend time walking up and down, enjoying the sun, and the torture instruments are so dilapidated that the old man, Mano de Montero, uses their pieces to make toys. The old boy takes them through corridors to a building, and Salvador explains that this is where a commission gathers to talk about the revolution.
Here Pipaón tells the men that it is true that he supported the absolutist cause, but now he believes that there should be a constitution. When he is there, someone comes announcing that Lozano de Torres has been banished, and the new minister is Buenaventura. When Salvador and Pipaón leave, the former tells him that he is to go to Andalucia to fight for the cause.
When Pipaón gets home, Jenara is awake, and once again he lies through his teeth. Jenara saw him and Salvador leave the house, and Pipaón tells him that he handed Salvador to the authorities and he is now in prison, and he certainly will be executed. Jenara's reaction is strange, and she says that even though she knows it is a good thing for Salvador to pay for his crimes, she can also be generous. I have the hunch that Jenara still loves Salvador and remembers when he used to court her.
Then Jenara's husband, Carlos, arrives, and a few days later they move to a big house. Pipaón is a frequent visitor, and he notices that the relationship between Carlos and Jenara is cold. Then when he and Carlos are alone, Carlos tells him that he is not happy in his marriage because even though he loves Jenara, he is certain that she doesn't love him. He says that he is small but Jenara is big. Then he says that if Jenara were to be unfaithful to him, he would kill her, and what he wants is for Pipaón to tell him what he knows. Pipaón says that Jenara's behaviour is impeccable, but Carlos says that he talked to Doña Fe, and she told him about his wife's escapades during the night with the maid. Pipaón explains that what Jenara did was to go after Salvador because he wanted to bring him to justice. Carlos believes Pipaón, but he also believes that there is another man in his wife's life, and nothing that Pipaón tells him can make him change his mind.
