• Ginger Gold (39) is the main character. She is a widow as her husband, Daniel, died during the war. Her father died the year before and the reason she goes to London is to sell her father's house. Ginger was born in England but was raised in Boston, and she claims she won't stay in England for long. During the war she was active, and that is why she is so keen to be involved in the investigation.
• Chief Inspector Basil Reed (40) is the detective on board the ship. He is of the London Crime Investigation Unit. Ginger describes him as very attractive, and he seems to enjoy Ginger's company.
• Haley Higgins is Ginger's friend and companion. They met during the war as Haley was a nurse, and after that, she worked for Ginger's father as a nurse. Now Haley wants to be a doctor and is going to study medicine in London. 
• Boss is Ginger's dog.
• Sally Hartigan is Ginger's stepmother. It seems that there is no love lost between Ginger and Sally. She is only mentioned in the book. 
• Louisa Hartigan is Ginger's half-sister. She is only mentioned in the book. 
• Mr Wellington is a successful accountant who Ginger mentions as having been her suitor. He is only mentioned in the book. 
• Molly is Ginger's maid but she had to leave her in Boston as the maid is afraid of sailing. She is only mentioned in the book. 
• Daniel Gold is Ginger's late husband. 
• Ambrosia is Daniel's grandmother. She is only mentioned in the book. 
• Felicia is Daniel's sister. She is only mentioned in the book. 
• Clive Pips is the butler in Hartigan House. 

Characters who may only appear in this book:

• Captain Joseph Walsh is the victim in the book.
• Elise Walsh is the captain's wife. She has no problem stating that the marriage was nothing but a facade. Elise is in love with the chef. She is one of the women murdering the captain.
• Banineux is the chief chef on the ship and he is in love with Elise Waslh.
• Nancy Guilford is an American actress and the captain's lover. Even though she is famous, we discover that she is having financial difficulties. Nancy had a child by the captain, a secret she and Patty kept from everybody.
• Patty Applebaum is Nancy's companion. Ginger discovers that she is Nancy's aunt, and her attachment to Nancy made her take her revenge on the captain, murdering him, for the way he has treated her niece.
• Mrs Fairchild is a passenger on the ship. Ginger avoid her as she is a terrible gossip.
• Mr Fairchild is a passenger travelling on the ship. Unlike his wife, he is very quiet. 
• Chief Officer MacIntosh is the officer who replaces the captain. He is a suspect because Ginger saw him and the captain argue, and the man says that the captain owed him a lot of money.
• Scout is a stowaway on the ship that Ginger pays to walk Boss.
• Marvin is Scout's cousin.
• Roy Hardy is the waiter on the ship. Ginger notices that he likes Chloe, the maid, so she helps him approach her.
• Chloe is the chambermaid that Roy likes.
• Doc Johnson is the ship's physician.
