SPOILERS!!!
Ginger Gold is a rich lady who travels on board SS Rosa with her friend and companion Haley Higgings. Their destination is London where Ginger wants to seel her late father's house, and Haley is to study medicine there. Ginger is widow as her husband died during the war, and she is a determined woman with experience as a spy in the war.
Ginger and Haley are invited to have dinner at Captain Walsh's table, and during dinner Ginger observes that the captain's wife, Mrs Walsh, seems to have no rapport with her husband, and she notices the looks passing between the captain and the famous actress, Nancy Guilford. There are some other people who Ginger sees at dinner, an older lady, Patty Applebaum, who is a companion of Nancy, and an attractive gentleman.
The next day when they are in the dining room, the chef, alerts that he has found the captain dead in a barrel of herring. It is then that Ginger discovers that the attractive man is a police detective, whose name is Basil Reed. Even though CI Reed tells her to stay away from his business, Ginger and Haley investigate together. They sneak into the captain's room and they think that the captain was hit in the head with a candleholder missing from the cabin. The main question is why the murderer left the body in the barrel when they could have got rid of him by tossing him in the sea. Their idea is that two people worked together: they hit him and then they transported him to the kitchen.
Ginger suspects that Nancy may have worked together with the first officer, MacIntosh. Nancy admitted to being the captain's lover, but Ginger learns that she had a child by the captain and he didn't seem eager to divorce his wife, and the officer may have wanted the captain's position. Another possibliity is that Mrs Walsh and the chef killed him. They were in love, and Mrs Walsh may not have wanted a divorce.
In the end, Ginger helps discover that the people who killed the captain were Patty Applebaum and Mrs Walsh. Patty was very angry that the captain wouldn't make Lucy an honest woman, and things were going wrong financially for them. And Mrs Walsh was also involved.
I loved the mystery and I will follow the series.
